      Alternative Energy

We have never had an Escom link. We generate all our own energy needs, one day we hope to have only renewable energy but at the moment we at least generate all our own

      Solar

We use solar panels to convert and store the energy of the sun for hot water, cooking, and to power radios, hi-fi’s, computers, fans, lights, sewing machines, food processors etc. For our lights, radio and fans, we use a 12 volt system  and an inverter to 220 volts for other appliances.

      Wind

      Picture
Photovoltaic panels and the two tiny wind turbines
As the windmills turn the energy created is stored in batteries or used in pumping or moving water. We plan to use wind energy in both ways mentioned here

We only have these two little turbines which make an amazing difference as when the wind blows they generate 24 hours a day, so when we can afford it we will be upgrading our wind power

      Water

Running water can be used to turn machinery, like old flour mills. It can also turn a turbine and that energy produced can be stored in batteries for later use.

McGregor has a “leiwater” system. From a storage dam at the top of the village there is a network of sluits” or small channels ussed to run water through the village to the inhabitants for use in their gardens. This system is used in many of the country towns. I would like to utilize this water to produce energy, as well as for ponds we will develop in our gardens. We are now starting this project.

I have two wood stoves, one on my summer veranda and the other in my kitchen. The wood is harvested from eucalyptus trees on our property, which I cut in the autumn every year.

      Passive Solar

Another form of alternative energy is Passive Solar. This is where one throws shade onto walls and windows to cool the home. This can de done by planting of trees or putting up physical shade with reeds or canes/lathes as we do

      Gas

Eventually I hope to use only renewable energy, but at the moment I use gas as a winter backup for heating water and in both cottages we also use gas stoves and gas fridges.
